How is Kratom, Mitragynine and 7-OH Ingested?

Kratom, a plant native to Southeast Asia, has been traditionally used for centuries for its stimulating and pain-relieving properties. With growing popularity in the West, kratom is now widely consumed in various forms to experience its potent effects, largely due to the active alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH). Here's a high-level overview of all the ways kratom can be ingested:

1. Kratom Powder (Whole Leaf or Extracts)

Kratom powder is the most common form of ingestion. It is made by grinding dried kratom leaves into a fine powder and can be consumed in multiple ways:

Toss and Wash: The powder is placed directly in the mouth and swallowed with water. This is a fast and effective way to ingest kratom, but it can be unpleasant due to the bitter taste.

Capsules: Kratom powder is enclosed in capsules, offering a more convenient and taste-free method of ingestion. It also allows users to easily control their dosage.

Teas: Kratom powder can be brewed into tea. Since alkaloids like mitragynine are water-soluble, they will dissolve into the tea, providing a gentler, slower onset of effects compared to other methods.

2. Kratom Extracts

Kratom extracts are concentrated forms of kratom, which have higher concentrations of active alkaloids like mitragynine and 7-OH. They are typically more potent and are used for users seeking stronger effects and the need not to ingest so much plant matter.

Liquid Extracts: These are concentrated kratom tinctures or drops that can be consumed directly or added to drinks. They offer faster onset due to their liquid form and concentration. Currently there are two major kratom alkaloids that are offered in liquid extracts that offer different effects, mitragynine and 7-OH.

Special equipment and methods are used to extract these specific alkaloids which are then mixed with flavors, colors, binders and pressed into chewable tablets.

Powder Extracts. Mitragynine and 7-OH powder is what is used to make tablets but can also be purchased by itself. It is then measured using a sensitive scale to get precise dosing as these powders can be extremely powerful.

4. Kratom Tea

Brewing kratom into tea is a traditional method of ingestion, especially popular in Southeast Asia. Kratom leaves or powder are steeped in hot water, allowing the active alkaloids to dissolve into the tea. This method provides a gentler onset of effects, making it ideal for those who prefer a slower and longer experience.

5. Smoking or Vaping Kratom

Though smoking or vaping kratom is not a common method, some users attempt it for a faster onset of effects. However, this method is not well-researched and may not be as effective in delivering 7-OH compared to other ingestion methods like drinking tea or taking capsules. It is generally not recommended for consistent use.

6. Other Specialized Methods

Kratom Resin and Paste: These concentrated forms of kratom can be consumed in smaller doses or mixed into drinks for a potent effect. They are highly concentrated and provide a more intense experience due to the higher concentration of 7-OH.

Conclusion

Kratom can be ingested in various forms, each offering a different experience and onset time. Whether consumed as powder, capsules, extracts, or tea, the method of ingestion influences how quickly the body absorbs and metabolizes the active compounds, particularly 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH). Understanding the different methods allows users to choose the best option based on their preferences and desired effects, while always emphasizing responsible use.
